Created in 2005, YouTube celebrates its 10th birhday this year. Why is it so succesful?

The first video uploaded on YouTube is called "Me at the zoo". It was posted in 2005 by Jawed Karim, one of the three creators of the website, and it shows him at San Diego zoo. The video is not interesting, but it was the begining of a great succes story: Internet users suddenly had a platform to share their ow videos! With 300 hours of content uploaded every minute, you will always find what you are looking for. You decide what you want to watch on your own "tube" a slang word for "TV".


Influence and Barack Obama:
YouTube is not only used by young people, humorists, or for cat videos. It is also a perfect way for politicians and importan public igures to reach a wider audience. For this 2008 presidential campaing, Barack Obama used YouTube as his main channel of information. One of the best known videos sows obama giving his first speech with the slogan "Yes we can". The slogan helped him to become the first black president of the United States of America!

Music and Justin Bieber:
In 2007, videos of a 13-year-old boy singing and playing the guitar were posted on YouTube. A music producer saw them, was impressed and contacted the singer's mother. The myth Justin Bieber began. Two years later, Biebe's song were a huge hit with teenagers. Without YouTube, Justin Bieber's success would not have been so fast. And like him, other singers have been discovered on YouTube like PSY with his song "Gangnam Style" -it is still the website's most-viewed video ever.

Maths, make-up and cooking:
Salman Khan started teaching his cousin maths via videos uploaded on YouTube. His views continued to grow and, in 2006, Khan created the "Khan Academy", a Youtube channel offering free tutorials and classes. The videos were viewed 458 milion times all around the world. Today, there are thousands of tutorials on YouTube. You can learn to do almost anything: knitting, make-up, and even unblochink toilets!

Times square

Times square is a must for visitors to New York City. 50 million people come here every year t go to the theatre, see the neon signs and just relax!

BROADWAY:
This street runs along Times Square. It has lots of theatres where you can see famous plays and musicals, like Mamma Mia! Broadway is actually a road that is 53 km long!!

HEY, TAXI:
Times Square is always full of yellow taxis. They drop people at the theatre and at the cinema at all hours of the day and night!

THE FAMOUS STEP:
These steps are in front of the theatre ticket office. People buy cheap tickets here, meet their friends or just sit down and relax.

Mario the star.
Mario is famous video game character in the hole world. He has appeared in more than 200 different video games. He is also popular that a survey found that American children reconigzed Mario more than Micky Mouse.

Donkey Kong:
And the creation of Mario first appeared in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong but he was called Jumpman. And he wasn't a plumber, he was a carpenter! It was a fun game where a man with moustache had to jump over obstacles to save a princess. The game was Nintendo's first big video game success.


The nintendo evolution:
In 1985, the new Nintendo Entretainment System(NES)revolutionized video games. The console had new video games like Super Mario Bros, where Mario had to run and jump thorung a mushroom kingdom. Players could now control how high Mario jumped and how fas he ran. And there were diferents levels, so they could play the game for longer. It was voted the most importain game in video game history.

Game Boy and the DS:
In the 1990s, Nintendo created a new concept, the Game Boy. Kids everywhere wanted to have one. This portable console was the first to have cartridges, including Mario, Pokemon and Tetris, an addictive puzzle game. Then in the 2000s, a better version of the Game Boy was invented: the DS. It was the firts portable console with dual screens.

THE WII:
In 2006, the Wii changed the video game experience. For the first time, the whole family could play together and have fun controlling the game with physical gestures. Sometimes people have accidents and break furniture when playing the game! The mkost popular Wii games are Wii Sports, like table tennis, canoeing, golf and bowling. This summer Mario Kart was a best selling game for Wii-U

THE FUTURE IS MARIO:
Nintendo has big plans for Mario. Next year he will appear in Mario Maker, a new game where players can customize elements and create their own levels. But why do we love Mario so much? Well, Mario games are fun and never violent. And after 30 years, he is still original. A fat little Italian-American plumber everybody knows and loves.
